A handcrafted log building does not have to look old-fashioned. We combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design language — clean lines, generous glazing, and precise detailing — so your log home feels timeless rather than nostalgic.
The Book: Hirsi arkkitehtuurin alkuaineena (2023)
Our master log builder, Timo Aro-Heinilä, has authored a book that explores both the technical foundations of log construction and visionary concepts for future log architecture.
The book is currently available in Finnish; an English edition is in progress.
Design Possibilities
Fan-like assembly with logs. Traditionally, butts and tops alternate along a wall. By orienting all butts one way and all tops the other, selected corners rise higher, creating a dynamic rhythm and sculptural silhouette. There are several ways to use this composition to get a fresh twist to a building.
Glass & light. Thoughtful integration of large glass surfaces brings nature close – ideal for living rooms and saunas — while preserving the covering and structural benefits of solid logs in more intimate spaces.
Curved and arched walls. Walls can subtly bow outward before the plate log or sweep inward like a vault. These controlled curves open up a wide range of expressive, yet buildable, forms.
Corner styles. From refined saddle-notches to crisp locking corners at 45°, we tailor the corner language to the architecture and context.
Collaboration with Your Architect
Bring us your concept or appoint us early in schematic design. We provide practical detailing, scribing expertise, and structural input to ensure beauty, buildability, and longevity. We are also happy to recommend architects and engineers experienced in handcrafted log structures.
Capacity & Coordination
All critical joinery and fit-up are performed under cover in our ~800 m² atelier in Naantali. For larger or international projects, we also coordinate production in vetted partner workshops under Hirsitikka supervision to maintain tolerances, surface quality, and schedule.
Materials on Hand
We keep a large stock of slow-grown Nordic pine — dense, stable, and ideal for durable handcrafted work.
Let’s Design Your Log Home
Sometimes a project really can proceed smoothly. Tell us how you want to live; we’ll help you turn that into structure, light, and form.
